Letter to the Editor: Why We Need the FairTax Now

HOPKINS COUNTY, KY - All of my adult life I have always had a problem with the Federal Income tax as well as the other vast amount of taxes we are forced to pay. In the Bible Mark 12:17 it says “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and give to God what is God’s.” In my opinion, Caesar wants way too much.

I guess what blows my mind about federal taxes is the fact that everyone has gone along with them for so long that it has gotten totally out of control. From the time when I was 18 years old (if you’re wondering Gerald Ford was the President at that time- you do the math) I knew there had to be a better way. For years I searched and searched. Then in the late 90’s talk started about a flat tax. Hey if 10% is good enough for Jesus it should be good enough for Uncle Sam. I liked the flat tax idea but there was just something there that kept me from jumping on the bandwagon.

"Hey if 10% is good enough for Jesus it should be good enough for Uncle Sam."

Then one night in 2004 as I was watching Fox News, a radio talk show host named Neal Boortz, who I was not familiar with at the time, was talking about a book he had just written with Congressman John Linder of Georgia. The book was called “The FairTax”.  To be honest with you I am one that doesn’t get excited about too many new book releases but this one got my attention. So that week I went out and purchased a copy of this book called “The FairTax.” I took it home and started reading it. The FairTax excited me and here is why:

The FairTax will end all Earnings Based Taxes:
-Personal Income Taxes
-Business Income Taxes
-Payroll Taxes
-Capital Gains Taxes
-Estate & Gift Taxes
-Alternative Minimum Tax

No more taxes on:
-Labor
-Hard work
-Productivity
-Achievement
-Success
-Savings and investment

Instead:
-We’ll pay a national sales tax when we buy NEW goods and services
-No tax on used products and
-No tax on basic necessities

Here’s How
Every American citizen will receive a monthly pre-bate check to cover the federal sales tax on necessities such as food, clothing and shelter.

The FairTax will:
-Stimulate the economy
-Transfer power from politicians (and lobbyists) to the people
-Eliminate the IRS
-Free us from record keeping, tax returns and audits
-Bring offshore $$$s back to the U.S.
-Cause the underground economy to share in the tax burden
-Be simple, transparent and FAIR

At first everyone I talked with said this is a great idea but it will never pass. Then several years ago I traveled to Ames, Iowa to the Iowa Republican Straw Poll and personally met Neal Boortz and Cong. Linder and saw and met many FairTax supporters and it really showed me that there were so many others who felt the same way that I did. Over the last few years and even more so in the last 14 months the FairTax is gaining great momentum all over the country with over 60 co-sponsors of the bill in Congress and it is for sure to be a big issue in the upcoming November election. If you would like to learn more, I invite you to hear me speak on the FairTax at “Let’s Rally for America” April 15th at 5:30 pm at Dolly McNutt Plaza in Paducah or visit www.FairTax.org.

What can you do to help? First, call your U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives and let them know you want them to work to pass the Fair Tax.
Second-In this election season when you see the candidates running for Congress or U.S. Senate ask them their views on the FairTax and let them know you support it.

With the passage of the Fair Tax April 15th will be just another beautiful spring day.
