Madisonville, KY — The City of Madisonville announced today that a portion of the downtown area has been designated as a free Wi-Fi Zone. The free service, which is available in the area of downtown Madisonville that is bounded by Arch Street, CSX Railroad, Center Street, and Franklin Street, offers users up to four hours of free internet service every twenty-four hour period. Users of the Downtown Madisonville Wi-Fi Zone will first hit a “splash” (landing) page that they must agree to the terms of service before proceeding onto the World Wide Web. Once agreeing to the terms of service the user will then be directed to the City of Madisonville’s home page and from there can visit other websites.

Community Development Director Daron Jordan, stated, “We are pleased to partner with Newwave Communication to provide this service to visitors of the downtown district. We feel this service is another tool that we can provide to help promote economic development in the downtown area. Two of the three external antennas are located on city owned property with a third antenna to be located on a downtown building owned by US Bank. We are very fortunate that US Bank has allowed us to locate a third antenna on their property as this gives us the ability to provide a stronger signal in the coverage area.”

The system was purchased by the City of Madisonville at a cost of about $6,500 and Newwave Communication will provide maintenance on the system and is providing the bandwidth necessary for the system to operate. The system is configured so that adult content websites are blocked and will allow administrators to block off any user who violates local, state, or federal electronic transmission laws.
