American Veterans Tribute Opens at Fairgrounds

HOPKINS COUNTY, KY – Today was the official opening of the American Veterans Traveling Tribute and Tribute to Heroes of Freedom at the Hopkins County Convention Center and Fairgrounds.

The parking lot was full today as local veterans, families of veterans, local First Responders (police, firefighters, EMT’s,) and citizens of Hopkins County attended the opening ceremony of what will be a long-remembered tribute to local heroes.

At noon the Cost of Freedom ceremony was held, which included a very moving and patriotic posting of colors by the North and Central Junior ROTC’s, followed by an invocation by Butch Pulley. Afterwards, Superintendent James Stevens recited the Pledge of Allegiance with Cindy Boggs following up with a rendition of the National Anthem.

The ceremony went on with introductions by Mike Vaughn and the laying of wreaths by Pam Coakley.  Afterwards the Central Junior ROTC performed a POW/MIA ceremony. This very patriotic ceremony ended with Butch Pulley singing “God Bless the USA,” and a benediction by Brother Steve Sandefur.

Those attending took time to visit various exhibits, including the main aspect, the mobile veteran’s wall. The wall itself is, in appearance, amazingly similar to the original veteran’s wall. The wall was set up across the back area of the campground and stretched for hundreds of feet, with what appeared to be thousands of names of soldiers.

iSurf News reporters spoke with Robert Houston, the driver of the truck that transports the Veteran’s Wall around the United States.

“There are actually three walls, all identical, that are constantly going from area to area,” said Houston. “We’re traveling year around for the most part, all over the United States, in remembrance of our soldiers.”

Houston informed reporters that, though the ceremony’s would be held at certain times this week until Sunday, the Memorial would be open and accessible to local citizens twenty-four hours per day.

Tonight at 7:00 PM there will be an evening ceremony with the Junior ROTC returning once more, and a performance of patriotic music by the Concord Baptist Church Choir. There will be more ceremonies throughout the week.

This event was sponsored by over one hundred local businesses.
