LEXINGTON, KY - With the winter heating season quickly approaching, Kentucky Utilities Company is bolstering financial support for its heating assistance program.
Specifically, KU is increasing its customer match for the WinterCare fund from 25 cents to $1 — four times the traditional match. The increased match is retroactive, beginning Nov. 1 and will continue through March 31.
The WinterCare Energy Assistance Fund is a nonprofit program promoted by KU. It is managed by an independent third party, typically a Community Action Council, and the utilities play no role in determining recipient eligibility. Since 1983, the program has raised more than $1.8 million dollars to help families in need pay their winter heating bills.
“We recognize that given the sluggish economy, those least able to pay their energy bills will need even more assistance this winter heating season,” said John P. Malloy, vice president of Energy Delivery – Retail for LG&E and KU Energy. “The continued support of WinterCare by individuals and organizations in our region is critical, and with the announcement of our increased match, donations to those assistance programs will go even further to help customers in need.”
Residential customers may donate to the programs by making a monthly pledge or a one-time contribution. Donations are tax-deductible.
KU customers should contact their local community action agency for eligibility requirements through the WinterCare program.
