FRANKFORT, KY - Governor Steve Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff on Saturday, November 20, 2010 in honor of a Fort Campbell soldier who died while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
According to the Department of Defense, Spc. Anthony Vargas, 27, of Reading, Pa., died Nov. 8 in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.
Burial services for Spc. Vargas will be held on November 20 at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, N.Y. Governor Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise on November 20th and encourages individuals, businesses, organizations and government agencies to join in this tribute.
