HOPKINS COUNTY, KY - R.L. (Rube) Thorpe, 78, of Madisonville, KY, passed away at 2:04 P.M., Thursday, November 11, 2010, at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.
He was born November 20, 1931, in Hopkins County, KY to the late John Clyde and Helen Mathis Thorpe. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Ruth Thorpe; brothers and sisters; Willard Thorpe, James Thorpe, Mildred Russell Thorpe, John C. Thorpe, Jr. and Elizabeth Thorpe Lantrip.
R.L. (Rube) Thorpe served in the US Navy Air Corp September 1951-September 1955, and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge as well as a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. He was a Christian and he loved the Lord and through the years he had served as Sunday School teacher. He worked in the coal industry and was superintendent for Peabody Coal Company for many years. He was a mining engineer and land surveyor.
He is survived by his children; Roger (Kim) Thorpe of Madisonville, Danny (Sherry) Thorpe of Hanson, Anita Thorpe of Madisonville and Nancy (Steve) Thorpe Parker of Hanson; two sisters, Katherine Thorpe Gresham of Lamasco, KY and Patricia Thorpe Hunt of Ilsley, KY; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 2:00 P.M., Monday, November 15, 2010, with Bro. Gary Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Madisonville.
Visitation will be 2:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M on Sunday and 12:00 P.M. until the service time on Monday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Justin Thorpe, Chad Baldwin, Ross Thorpe, Kyle Thorpe, Dylan Basham and Jon Pendley. Honorary pallbearers will be Tracey Thorpe, John Thorpe, David Thorpe, Mike Lantrip, Mark Russell, Chris Hunt and Carrie Hunt LeFevre.
