MADYSWIM Hurricanes Attend Owensboro Meet

HOPKINS COUNTY, KY—The MADYSWIM Hurricanes from the Hopkins County YMCA swam last weekend at the Owensboro Health Park with 7 other teams competing from around the Region. The Owensboro Marlins hosted the 1st USA Swimming Sanctioned meet of the winter season, which ran from Friday to Sunday with approx 90 swimmers in attendance.

Ashlynn Fair, 10, took the Individual High Point award for her age group, and led all team swimmers in point totals by coupling 5 individual wins with 5 second place finishes.  Her wins came in the 200 yard IM, 100 yard IM, 200 yard Free, 50 yard Backstroke, 100 yard Backstroke, and 50 yard Breaststroke.  Runner-up spots came in the 50 yard Breaststroke, 100 yard Breaststroke, 50 yard Freestyle, 100 yard Freestyle, and 50 yard Butterfly.

Laura Carver, 12, attained 5 state championship qualifying times during her individual wins in the 50 & 100 yard Backstroke events, along with runner up finishes in the 200 yard IM, 50 & 100 yard Breaststroke, 50 yard Butterfly, 50&100 yard Freestyle events.  Her 3rd and 4th place finishes in the 200 yard and 500 yard open division freestyle events provided enough points for her to bring home the High Point award for her age group as well.

Gillian Senter, 11, won all five of her individual events in route to 3 state championship qualifying times. Her victories came in the 50 & 100 yard freestyle, 50 & 100 yard backstroke, and the 50 yard butterfly.

Abby Fair, 8, won the girl’s 25 yard Breaststroke event to go with 5 additional top 5 finishes.  Kelee Carter, 10, and Emma Rochelle, 11, also competed in the meet, each scoring multiple top 5 finishes.

The Relay Team of Fair, Carver, Senter, and Rochelle recorded the first state qualifying time of any relay for the young MADYSWIM team.  Their time of 2:08.10 in the 200 yard Freestyle relay was bested by the host Owensboro Marlins by a mere .13 seconds in the most thrilling race of the weekend.

On the Boys side, Jacob DeMecurio, 13, won the 200 yard Backstroke along with 7 other top 3 finishes. Jacob also recorded 4 State Championship qualifying times. Drew Dodds and Eli Barnhill both took multiple top 5 finishes in the 11 year-old divisions as well.

The Hurricanes are preparing for an upcoming USA meet at Newburgh, IN in late October.  The Newburgh Swim Club competition is expected to draw in excess of 400 swimmers from around the region.  For more information about the team, contact the Hopkins County YMCA, or visit the team website at

Coach Keenan Carver commented that, “Our Team looked great in the water in many ways this weekend. We were sporting our new team Suits and Caps, which not only looked fast, but were backed up by a lot of very good fast swims.”

“To have this many State Cuts made, and individual wins early in the season bodes well for the rest of the year,” noted Carver. “Our Girls team is to the point now that we can compete with anyone, with Ashlynn, Laura, and Gillian able to consistently be in the top 3 nearly every swim.”

iSurf News congratulates the MADYSWIM team on all their accomplishments at the meet and thanks them for the entertaining follow-up information on the event as well.
