Hopkins County, KY – It was a crisp clear night at Maroon Stadium Friday night as the Ohio County Eagles came to visit the Madisonville North Hopkins Maroons.

It looked like the Maroons were ready to roll as they won the toss and took the ball quickly down the field on a 39 yard scamper by Denzel Johnson. On the next play, Trey Carr took the ball into the end zone for what was thought to be a touchdown. However, there was a flag on the play and the touchdown was nullified by a holding penalty. On the next play, Madisonville’s Trey Carr pass was intercepted by Ohio County ending that drive. After Ohio County was unable to move the ball, Denzel Johnson again ran 69 yards. After an Ohio County facemask penalty, the Maroons found themselves on the four yard line. Carr and Johnson connected for 6 points.  Ohio County drove the ball down the field and scored on a field goal of 30 yards. This was the quarter for give and takeaways as the Maroons fumbled the ball away on the next two possessions. The quarter ended with the Maroons up 7-3.

The second quarter saw the Maroons score three times with a 14 yard pass from Trey Carr to Deonte Hines, a 58 yard run by Trey Carr and a 17 yard pass to Denzel Johnson with no time left in the half. They also had a 42 yard run by Trey Carr again nullified by a holding penalty. Ohio County also scored in that quarter on a 2 yard run, making the halftime scores 26 to 9.  

The third quarter saw more running and passing on the legs and arms of Trey Carr and Denzel Johnson. Denzel scored on a 13 yard run and a 19 yard run with Jawan Combs scoring a two point conversion. Carr also had a 58 yard toss to Daniel Goodman as the Maroons moved the ball up and down the field. Carr also was in on the defensive side of the ball with an interception thwarting an Ohio County drive. The end of the third quarter ended with the Maroons up 42-9.

The fourth quarter saw some different players out on the field. One of the defensive standouts, Rashad Combs went on the offensive and had runs of 3 yrds, 26 yrds, 17 yards and then scoring the final touchdown of the night on a 30 yard run into the end zone. The extra point made the final score 49 to 9.

The Madisonville Maroons amassed 640 total yards of offense to 191 yards by Ohio County. They had 37 carries for 468 yards rushing. The Maroons were led by three players with over 100 yards rushing. Denzel Johnson had 164 yards rushing, Trey Carr had 139 and Rashad Combs had 102 yards rushing. Carr was 10 of 17 for 172 yards passing. Daniel Goodman had 5 catches for 89 yards and Denzel Johnson had 5 receptions for 55 yards.

The Maroons will be on the road next week as they take on the Owensboro Red Devils in Owensboro. The start time for this game is 7:00 next Friday night.
