The enormity of ice storm damages is settling down on our street as the mounting debries were finally removed. The cleaning crew worked four straight days on our street.  A worker told me she worked 7 to 7, 7 days a week.  Thank goodness for their hard work, our street is beginning to look like ready for spring flowering trees whatever survived.  One local guy stopped by the huge truck claning up the debris, gave the crew a pack of beer for appreciation.  Suddenly my tired bones felt so light to witness a flower of human kindness.

Anne Priest Baker died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday morning, March 10, 2009, following a brief illness in Nashville, Tennessee where she had been living for the past five years. Anne was born in 1919 in Norfolk, Virginia, the youngest of six children of Mary and Fenton Priest. Anne graduated from Randolph Macon Women's College in 1941 and in 1944 married James Baker. In 1946 Anne and James moved to Madisonville so that he could take over management of the family's department store, Baker and Hickman.

Since President Obama took office, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has dropped another 30% continuing a decline to 6,800 from a high of 14,000 just a few months ago.  The drop in the Dow Jones Average below 7,000 has many investors worried.  The 7,000 level represents a 50% decline from the high and is seen a key level for investors.  When the Dow closed at 6,800, many investors feared a 6,000 or even a 5,000 Dow in the coming months.

Slick roadways cause an accident that injured a Dawson Springs woman.  60 year old Frank Oliver was traveling North on Highway 91 near Princeton Saturday night when his vehicle struck a patch of ice.  His vehicle ran off the road and struck a ditch.  A passenger in his vehicle, 57 year old Margaret Oliver was transported to the Caldwell County Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.  Mr. Oliver was not injured.

The Hopkins County Sheriff's Office arrested two suspects Thursday following a drug investigation.  As part of an extensive narcotics investigation, investigators from the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office and Pennyrile Narcotics Task Force executed a search warrant for a residence on Sugg St in Madisonville.  During a search of the residence of 34 year old Cleveland Hubbard, a quanity of crack cocaine and marijuana were found along with a large sum of currency and other narcotic-related information. 

Hubbard and 38 year old Veatrus Hopson were both arrested and charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana.  They were lodged in the Hopkins Co. Jail.

The Hopkins County Fiscal Court has a new magistrate.  Judge Executive Donnie Carroll told isurf news that Wilma Rogers was sworn in prior to the court session.  Rogers is the widow of Larry Rogers who served as magistrate four 2 1/2 terms.  Rogers died in a construction accident in Dec.  Carroll said that he recommended to Gov. Steve Beshear that Rogers be chosen to fill the unexpired term.

The Madisonville City Council will met for a regular session Monday night.  The council will hear the second reading of two ordinances.  One ordinance is to amend chapter 150 of the city of Madisonville Code of Ordinances while the second is to amend chapter 152 of the city's code of ordinances and adopt the international property maintenance code, 2006 edition, regulating and governing the conditions and maintenance of all properties, buildings, and structures located in the city of Madisonville.  The council is also expected to review and award a bid for a pick-up truck for the wastewater treatement department and consider re-advertising for bids for a dump truck.

The meeting begins at 5:30P.m. in the Madisonville City Council Chambers.
